Wedding venues in Biarritz

Biarritz photographs as a belle époque resort, which is accurate and incomplete. The wedding geography is a short list of seafront hotels, a longer list of villas in the hills toward Arcangues and Bidart, and a handful of golf and park estates that can take weather. The town itself is the backdrop; the reception is usually slightly above it, where the noise of the Grande Plage drops.

This is a working map, not a ranking. Houses change chefs and owners. It is written from Biarritz by someone who lives on this coast. If a room is named, it is not because it paid to appear here.

The seafront and the palace hotels

The classic Biarritz picture is a terrace over the Grande Plage or the Côte des Basques. A small number of historic hotels can still deliver that: a ballroom, a staff who have run 150-person dinners, and a walk to the lighthouse for portraits. Capacity is the easy part. The constraint is August, when the same hotels are full of leisure guests and a wedding can feel like it is borrowing the building.

Hôtel du Palais

The address. Built by Napoleon III for Empress Eugénie, it is the only palace-rated hotel on the French Atlantic, with a ballroom over the ocean. Prestige-tier pricing, in-house catering, Imperial Spa and beachfront pool for the days around the wedding. Best for 80 to 200 guests who want a grand-hotel weekend.

Casino Municipal, Salle des Ambassadeurs

The art deco casino sits on the Grande Plage. The Hall of Ambassadors gives volume and a panoramic sea view a few steps from the beach. A choice for couples who want the town (bars, hotels, the promenade) woven into the day rather than an estate outside it. City rules apply: timing, parking, caterer coordination.

Alfred Hotels (Les Halles and Vieux Port)

Two boutique houses for 20 to 60 guests: a terrace near the covered market, a patio by the old fishing port. Lower cost, walkable, and a good fit if the dinner is the point.

If the photographs need the town, stay here. If the wedding needs privacy, look up the hill. A seafront ceremony at sunset sounds inevitable until you discover the promenade is public.

Villas in the hills

Toward Bidart, Arcangues, and the Route Impériale the pine starts and the houses have gardens. These are the rooms that work for a takeover: guests sleep on the property, lunch runs long, and nobody needs a taxi at midnight except the ones who want the bar in town. Capacities are often 60 to 120. Kitchens vary: some houses insist on a preferred caterer, which on this coast is not a compromise.

Château du Clair de Lune

A 19th-century manor about 5 kilometres from the centre, in a park of roses, magnolias, and rhododendrons. One of the closest true château options to town. Works for 60 to 120 guests who want that atmosphere without leaving Biarritz far behind.

Château de Larraldia

A 17th-century house between Biarritz and Bayonne, renovated in 2019: period bones, modern rooms. Convenient if guests are split between the two towns.

Domaine de Gaztelur

In the hills near Arcangues: antiques, gardens, mountain views. It suits couples who care about interiors as much as the postcode, and it photographs hard. Intimate to mid-size, not a 200-person Saturday.

Ask, early, about generators, neighbours, and whether the lane takes a coach. The most beautiful driveway is sometimes the one a bus cannot climb.

Golf, parks, and weather

A Basque summer squall is brief and sincere. If the guest list is over 100, you want a covered dinner that does not feel like a marquee parked on a lawn. Golf estates and park houses around Biarritz are useful for exactly this: a ceremony lawn, a room that can take the same number of people, and parking that does not involve the town centre in July.

Château de Brindos (Brindos, Lac & Château)

Five minutes from the airport in Anglet, on one of the largest private lakes in France. A lakefront restaurant behind glass, 29 rooms, and 10 floating lodges. Guests can sleep on site, which solves the coach. Photographers get water that no other local house has.

Domaine de Bassilour

A 16th-century Basque farmhouse 3 kilometres from Biarritz, meadows and a Pyrenees view, guest rooms on the property. Rural rather than polished, which is the point: red shutters, a slower pace, the ocean ten minutes away. One of the better-value estates in the belt.

The wider Nouvelle-Aquitaine pool

Beyond these nine, the region shares roughly 94 wedding properties across Nouvelle-Aquitaine, from ocean villas to mountain-view estates. The coast-adjacent ones still read as Basque. If none of the houses above fit the date or the count, the answer is usually within 30 minutes of Biarritz.

They are less “Biarritz” in the pictures. They are more reliable on the day.

How to choose

Start with the guest count and the month, not the Pinterest terrace. Under 40 in June can live in a villa. 160 in August almost certainly wants a hotel with a real banquet kitchen. If half the list is flying into BIQ for a long weekend, proximity to town matters more than a view of the pine.

Three questions sort the shortlist faster than a moodboard. Do guests sleep on site (Brindos, Bassilour, the hotels: yes; Clair de Lune and some event rooms: you need a hotel plan). Grand or Basque: the Palais and the Casino sell imperial Biarritz; the domaines sell the countryside; mixing both in one day rarely works. What the fee includes: hotels bundle catering; domaines often mean an approved traiteur; an empty estate means renting everything, which moves the budget by five figures.
