San Sebastián
San Sebastián (Donostia) is the Spanish Basque capital of appetite and civic pride: the Concha beach in a perfect arc, a Parte Vieja built for walking between pintxos, and a hotel tradition that has hosted diplomats and film stars. It is larger than the French towns, more urban, and often the right answer when the wedding is also a long weekend of eating. English is widely spoken in hotels; the wedding itself can be Spanish, Basque, French, or a mixture.
Venue types
Grand hotels on the Concha and Ondarreta
Belle Époque and contemporary palaces with ballrooms, sea views, and the staff to run a 150-person dinner. The classic San Sebastián picture.
Palaces and hill estates inland
Houses toward Igeldo, Miramar, and the rural Gipuzoa hinterland. More private, often with gardens, and a short drive from the tapas streets.
Gastronomic restaurants and private dining
The city’s real luxury. Some starred kitchens will close for a wedding lunch or an after-party. Capacity is the constraint; the food is the point.
Best months
June and September are the sweet months: the bay is in use, the film festival has not yet (or has just) taken the hotels, and the light lasts. May and October are underrated. August is crowded and expensive. A winter wedding here can be excellent — the city does not close.
Nearest airport
San Sebastián airport (EAS) in Hondarribia is 25–30 minutes and connects mainly through Madrid and Barcelona. Bilbao (BIO) is about 75–90 minutes and is the more useful international gateway. Biarritz (BIQ) is about 45 minutes for guests coming from Paris. The city is also on the Euskotren and Renfe network.
