Hondarribia wedding guide
A walled town on the French border with San Sebastián airport inside it. Garden hotels for 80 to 200, a golf club farmhouse, a castle parador for guests, and the dates to avoid.
Published Updated

Hotels at the foot of Jaizkibel take a wedding of 80 to 200 guests. Farmhouses above the town suit a list under 80. Hondarribia suits couples who want a small Spanish town: San Sebastián airport sits inside the town, France is a few minutes across the Bidasoa by passenger boat, and two hotels at the foot of Mount Jaizkibel list garden ceremonies and receptions for up to 180 and 200.
See Hondarribia for the overview. If a venue is named, its own listing or a dated public source confirms it hosts weddings or private events.
The town in brief
Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish) faces Hendaye across the mouth of the Bidasoa. The old town is enclosed by walls and climbs to the Plaza de Armas. The fishing quarter, La Marina, sits below, with painted houses and the restaurants. The beach and the marina are further out toward the river mouth.
Three things make it different from the rest of the coast:
- The airport. San Sebastián airport (EAS) is in Hondarribia itself. Some venues are ten minutes from the terminal.
- The border. A passenger boat links the town to Hendaye in a few minutes. Hendaye station has TGV connections from Paris.
- The hills. Mount Jaizkibel rises straight behind the town. The best wedding venues are on its lower slopes, among farmhouses and Hondarrabi Zuri vines.
For the choice between this side of the border and the French side, start with Biarritz vs San Sebastián. Hondarribia is the quieter Spanish option, about 25 minutes from San Sebastián by car.
Hotels with gardens on Jaizkibel
The two hotels that take full weddings sit just outside the walls, on the road toward the mountain. Both list their terms on Bodas.net, Spain’s main wedding directory, as of 2026.
Hotel Jaizkibel
At Baserritar Etorbidea 1, at the foot of Mount Jaizkibel. The listing gives a capacity of up to 200 guests across four event halls with natural light, a garden of wildflowers for the ceremony and cocktail, and on-site parking. The hotel hosts one event per day, with an end time of midnight. Menus are listed from 95 EUR per person, with set menus at 120 and 135 EUR. Catering is in-house, and the space is not hired without it. Guests get discounted rooms, and the couple a suite.
Hotel Río Bidasoa
At Nafarroa Beherea 1, near the river mouth. The listing gives 80 to 180 guests, a garden with a terrace, a marquee and a pool, and a banquet hall that opens onto the garden. A glass pavilion in the garden, La Pecera, holds up to 90 for the aperitif. Ceremonies take place in the garden. The hotel hosts one event per day, offers rooms at special rates and arranges transfers to the airport or to the Irun and Hendaye stations on request.
Both hotels are a short taxi ride from the old town. Guests who want the walls and the bars sleep inside them and travel out for the evening.
A farmhouse and the vineyard road
Real Golf Club de San Sebastián
Despite the name, the club is in Hondarribia, on the slopes of Jaizkibel. Its restaurant occupies Borda-Gain, a Basque farmhouse remodelled in the 1960s to house the club. The Bodas.net listing gives banquet rooms for up to 280, with a minimum of 80 guests for a wedding, landscaped gardens, a terrace, a dance floor and a space for the ceremony. Menus are listed from 50 EUR per person. This is the largest room in town and the one most likely to fit a guest list of 150 or more.
Sutan
At Jaitzubia 266, in the vineyards above town. The 2026 Michelin Guide lists it as a recommended restaurant, specialising in local fish and grilled meats, in an area of Hondarrabi Zuri vines and working closely with the Hiruzta txakoli winery. Bodas.net lists it for weddings of 50 to 200 guests. For a smaller weekend, it is also the natural choice for a rehearsal lunch among the vines.
What to drink at either is covered in Basque wedding traditions and what to serve. Hondarribia holds 3.5 percent of Gipuzkoa’s txakoli vineyard.
Inside the walls
Parador de Hondarribia
On the Plaza de Armas, in the castle that crowns the old town. The first fortress was built at the end of the 10th century under King Sancho Abarca of Pamplona. The hotel has 36 rooms, 32 doubles and 4 singles, for about 68 people. Its published facilities list a terrace, a bar and a conference room. No banquet hall is listed.
Use it as the couple’s base: the room where you get ready, the stone corridors for portraits, the first place guests see when they arrive.
Villa Magalean
A hotel of 8 rooms at Puntalea, listed in the Michelin Guide’s hotel selection. It suits the couple and immediate family who want privacy away from the main guest hotel.
The church
The church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano stands inside the walls, a few steps below the parador. It belongs to the diocese of San Sebastián. A Catholic wedding here can carry civil effect for foreign couples, with its own diocesan file. The rules are in can foreigners legally marry in Spain.
When to marry here
June and September are the strongest months, as across the coast. Hondarribia stays pleasant later into autumn than the exposed French beaches. The fiestas from 7 to 11 September are the exception.
Two sets of dates fill the old town. The town’s tourist office lists the main fiestas from 7 to 11 September, with the Alarde, a historic parade honouring a vow made to the Virgin of Guadalupe after the siege of 1638, on 8 September. On 25 July, the fishermen’s guild holds its Kutxa ceremony. A wedding that needs quiet streets and hotel rooms should sit outside both.
The full calendar is in best months for a Basque coast wedding.
Ceremonies
A civil wedding at Hondarribia town hall follows the Spanish rule: at least one partner must live in Spain and be registered locally. Most couples visiting from abroad sign the papers at home and hold the ceremony in a hotel garden or among the vines. The French and Spanish files side by side are in marrying on both sides of the border.
When you write to us, say whether guests should sleep inside the walls or by the venue, and whether the ceremony needs the vines or the stone.

Can we have our reception at the Hondarribia parador?
