Saint-Jean-de-Luz wedding guide
A harbour town of 14,857, 15 to 20 minutes from Biarritz airport, with bay restaurants, two hotels that take a weekend, and a 1660 royal marriage in the church.
Published Updated

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a harbour town of 14,857 residents, 15 to 20 minutes from Biarritz airport, with a sheltered bay and the church where Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain on 9 June 1660. Most visiting couples hold a symbolic ceremony and a dinner of 40 to 80 in a bay restaurant or a small hotel takeover.
The town is smaller than Biarritz and more concentrated. The old streets are low and tiled, built around fishing. See Saint-Jean-de-Luz for the overview. If a room is named, the official site or a dated public source confirms it hosts weddings or private events.
The town in numbers
INSEE’s municipal population for Saint-Jean-de-Luz is 14,857 as of 1 January 2023, the figure in force from 1 January 2026. Biarritz-Pays Basque airport (BIQ) is about 16 kilometres north, 15 to 20 minutes by car. Hendaye and the Spanish border sit about 8 kilometres south, around 15 minutes, which is why a guest list split between France and Spain can sleep here and reach both sides.
On 9 June 1660 Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain, daughter of Philip IV, in the église Saint-Jean-Baptiste on rue Gambetta. The BnF and the Institut national d’histoire de l’art both date the nuptial blessing to that morning. The church was still being rebuilt. The south wall and the tower were kept. The Basque galleries, where men once sat above the nave, are still there. The so-called marriage door was later walled up. Maison Louis XIV on Place Louis XIV, where the king lodged, is open for visits from April to November. It does not list private events. Maison de l’Infante on the port, where Maria Theresa stayed, is a private monument. Neither house is a wedding venue.
For the choice between this town, Biarritz, and San Sebastián, start with Biarritz vs San Sebastián. Saint-Jean-de-Luz sits between the two.
Harbour and bay restaurants
Dinners of 40 to 80 sit above the port or looking at the bay. Full buyouts are rarer than a private room or a group booking in a house that already cooks fish.
La Txalupa
On the fishing port, at 4 Place Louis XIV, with a terrace toward La Rhune. The tourist office lists banquet service and groups from 5 to 200. It is a working seafood room, not a dry-hire salon. Ask for a private lunch or a full evening, then walk guests through the old town.
Bizipoz
At 11 rue Marion Garay, in the centre, a few streets back from the quay. The official site lists full privatisation for weddings, with a terrace, and a four-star hotel on the same operation for guests who want to sleep a few streets from dinner. Best for a dinner when the building is yours for the evening.
If the photographs need the harbour, stay on the port. If the dinner needs the building to itself, Bizipoz is the one with an explicit wedding hire page.
Hotels where guests can stay
Two houses in town take a wedding weekend without sending everyone to Biarritz. They sit at different scales. For a larger French palace or a hill villa, the map is wedding venues in Biarritz, 20 minutes north.
Grand Hôtel Spa and Thalasso
At 43 boulevard Thiers, on the beach. The official site lists a five-star hotel of 52 rooms and suites, restaurant Aho Fina, and a Loreamar thalasso spa. The weddings and receptions page puts the sales and catering team on private events, including weddings. The tourist office listing for the Salon Arnaga, with daylight and an ocean view, at 20 for round tables and 35 for a cocktail, as of October 2026. Salon Arnaga takes a dinner of up to 20, or a cocktail of 35.
Hôtel Le Chantaco
On the Route d’Ascain, on the golf side of town. The official site lists 24 rooms and exclusive hire for about 50 people, with gardens, a terrace over the golf, and a restaurant. The events brochure lists privatisation for up to 56 in residence. Guests who want the bay walk ten minutes. Guests who want a takeover sleep on site.
Ciboure and the Nivelle
Across the Nivelle bridge, Ciboure and Socoa are the overflow when the town itself is booked.
Chez Pantxua
At 37 avenue du Commandant Passicot, Socoa, facing the bay. Pyrénées-Atlantiques tourism lists 120 covers and banquet service. It seats about 120, on a terrace facing the bay. Guests sleep in Ciboure, Socoa, or back in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Kinka
At Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, upriver from the bay. The official events page offers restaurant privatisation from 80 people, a 150 square metre dining room, and a covered terrace of 195 square metres. This is the Nivelle option when the guest list outgrows a harbour room and you still want a Basque country room large enough for the list.
When to marry here
Late May through June, and September: the bay is swimmable and the town has not yet, or has just, emptied of August. The Fêtes de la Saint-Jean fill the centre in late June. In 2026 they ran from 18 to 22 June, with traffic restrictions on boulevard Thiers and around the Halles. The town hall has published the 2027 dates: Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 June. Maison Louis XIV closes for those weekends. A wedding that needs quiet streets should sit outside that window.
August weekends slow the bay road between Biarritz and Hendaye. The calendar of weather, crowds, and the Bayonne and San Sebastián festival weeks is in best months for a Basque coast wedding.
Ceremonies
A legal marriage at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz mairie, on Place Louis XIV, needs the residence tie to the commune. Most couples visiting from abroad sign the papers at home and hold the ceremony here, in a restaurant, a hotel garden, or after a walk from the church that already holds the 1660 story. The French file, the Spanish file, and why neither is a shortcut are in marrying on both sides of the border.
When you write to us, say whether the harbour needs to be in the photographs, and whether guests should sleep on the beach or on the golf.

Questions we are asked
Is Saint-Jean-de-Luz a good place for a wedding?
Yes. It is a harbour town of 14,857 residents, 15 to 20 minutes from Biarritz airport, with a sheltered bay and the church where Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain on 9 June 1660. Most visiting couples hold a symbolic ceremony and a dinner of 40 to 80.
How far is Saint-Jean-de-Luz from Biarritz airport?
About 16 kilometres, 15 to 20 minutes by car in ordinary traffic. San Sebastián airport in Hondarribia is a similar time south, which is why the town works as a midpoint for a Franco-Spanish guest list.
Can you take over a hotel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz?
Hôtel Le Chantaco lists exclusive hire, with 24 rooms for about 50 people. The Grand Hôtel Spa and Thalasso has 52 rooms on the beach and lists weddings among private events. The historic maisons on the port are not event venues.
When should we avoid Saint-Jean-de-Luz for a wedding?
The Fêtes de la Saint-Jean fill the centre. In 2026 they ran from 18 to 22 June. The 2027 dates are 24 to 27 June. August weekends slow the bay road. June and September are the months we recommend elsewhere on this coast.
Can we marry legally at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz mairie?
Only with a residence tie to the commune. Most visiting couples marry at home and hold the ceremony here. The rules sit in our guide to marrying on both sides of the border.
